  • Location: Roman Nose State Park, near Watonga,
    Oklahoma
  • Type: Public, State Park
  • Course Review:
    • (18 holes): Hands down, this is the hardest course I’ve ever played, but insanely fun. It is well-worth the drive. Bring lots of extra balls, because it is a guarantee that you will lose a good number here, with shots over cliffs and creeks, narrow fairways, and lots and lots of impossible rough. The most difficult hole is #4, with hole #13 a close second. The Par 3, Hole #17 is my favorite hole with its dramatic drive off a cliff. If you are shooting from the white or red tees, this is one that might be fun to shoot from the blue tee anyway as the shot is easier to make than it looks.
  • Food and Drink: They have soft drinks, water, beer, and some snacks (chips, candy, etc.) for sale at the club house. They do not allow outside drinks or coolers on this course, but they have no problem with outside foods. Before or after your game, the Roman Nose State Lodge restaurant is very good, but too far to eat at mid-game.

Hole-by-Hole Tips

Jump to Hole: #123456789

Hole #1- Par 4 – 13 Handicap – Dogleg Left

  • Yardage to center of the greens: 357 (Blue) ? (White) ? (Red)
  • Blue tee tips (from the course description provided at the pro shop): Hit full driver, parallel to power lines, leaving a short iron to the sunken green. If the drive is left or short, a big tree protects the green. Behind the green, it falls off rapidly.
  • My tips:Roman Nose Golf -Hole #1 Map - from JMBGolf.com
    • Blue Option (from the blue tees, aiming for par):
      • Shot #1 – If you can hit 150+ yards, aim for the right side of the fairway to give a better view of the green, past the big tree to your left.
      • Shot #2 -If you had a clean drive past the big tree, then you have a nice clean 90 or so yard shot with a pitching wedge or a high iron to the green.  If your drive wasn’t so good, look at the white/red option for tips on how to proceed.
      • Shot #3 -Start putting
    • Red option (from the white or red tees, aiming for single bogey):
      • Shot # 1 – Don’t despair if you can’t hit a long drive yet. Instead aim for accuracy, keeping it on the fairway. I plotted this one on the map as approx. 120 yards, but your shot may vary. Don’t worry as long as you can keep it on the fairway.
      • Shot #2 – The goal is to get past the tree. There are several ways to do this: (1) going up and over with a wedge, (2) taking a safe approach to the right of the tree, or (3) aiming low to the ground (with a hybrid) trying to go under the tree. Which ever way you choose to go, the goal is to try to set yourself up for an easy pitch to the green.
      • Shot #3 – Pitch to the green.
      • Shot #4 – Start putting.

Hole #2- Par 5 – 11 Handicap – Straightway and downhill

  • Yardage to center of the greens: 517 (Blue), ? (white), ? (red)
  • Blue tee tips (from the course description provided at the pro shop):From an elevated tee box, you will not be able to see your drive land in the fairway. A red and white pole marks the middle of the fairway. Any drive left of the pole is history since the fairway slopes hard left. A forecaddie is a good idea. A drive that hits the electric lines may be re-teed and hit without penalty. An accurate second shot is required with the hill on the right and heavy rough on the left. The green falls off behind and to the left. After you hole out, you had better tie your shoes a bit tighter.
  • My tips:Roman Nose Golf -Hole #2 Map - from JMBGolf.com
    • Blue Option (from the blue tees, aiming for par):
      • Shot #1 – A long drive.  Try to aim to the right red-and-white stripped pole, but stay away from the hill which is a place where many balls are lost. Count yourself lucky if you can make it to fairway in one shot.
      • Shot #2 -This is a tricky shot. It is tempting to try to make a lot of yardage here, but accuracy is a big issue with the hazards. I would aim for the right side of the fairway, probably using a hybrid or a low iron.
      • Shot #3 -If you can pull it off, this is a long pitch to the green. But many will end up doing this in two shots.
      • Shot #4 – Start Putting
    • Red option (from the white or red tees, aiming for single bogey):
      • Shot # 1 -An accurate drive is key, so some choose to use a 3 wood instead of a driver. Aim for the right side of the fairway. The good news is that the distance to the start of the fairway is doable (120 yards) for most beginners, but if you can go further go for it. (the map shows a shot of around 140 yards).
      • Shot #2 -About 100 yards, so an iron shot for most beginners. One might try to go for more distance with a low iron or a hybrid but be careful. The hazards eat many balls on this hole.
      • Shot #3 -Unless you got lucky with a longer shot #2, you’ll need another approach shot, around 100 yards. Again accuracy is key. — But if your ball goes astray, don’t fret too much. Many players lose a ball on this hole. The key is to not get rattled and let it tank your score.  There are other holes in which you can make up for this hole, if you don’t get into too deep of a rut here.
      • Shot #4 -Hopefully an easy pitch in.
      • Shot #5- Start putting. If you can two-putt this one, be proud. A single bogey is hard to accomplish for most beginners.
